Prenatal Yoga

Prenatal Yoga – Each class is specifically sequenced to help with the needs of the students. Every class starts with the instructor checking with each student and asking “how are you feeling today”. If someone say’s their back hurts, we do poses for back pain. If someone is experiencing sciatica, we do poses for that.  Most discomforts associated with pregnancy can be alleviated through yoga.  Prenatal yoga is invaluable during your pregnancy not only to feel good but to help position baby properly in the womb for a comfortable labor!

It is important to take care of your body and your baby during pregnancy!  Yoga instructors and childbirth educators recommend 2-3 prenatal yoga classes a week.  Attending 2-3 yoga classes a week will give your body, mind and soul the time it needs to benefit from yoga.  Sphere Mama offers the largest selection of Prenatal Yoga classes in Santa Fe/Los Alamos. Benefits of Prenatal Yoga during your Pregnancy
There are many emotional and physical benefits gained from prenatal yoga. In prenatal yoga you will strengthen the uterus and pelvic muscles, improve circulation to both mother and baby, aid in digestion and elimination, exercise the spine and increase overall comfort. You will develop a deeper understanding and connection with your body and your baby and learn important relaxation techniques and positioning options that can be used during birth. The strength and stamina you will build during the classes will help lead to a faster postnatal recovery.

You will also practice specific postures designed to help alleviate many of the discomforts of pregnancy including:

•  nausea and constipation
•  emotional and physical fatigue
•  varicose veins
•  swelling and inflammation around your joints
•  low back pain and sciatica
•  headaches
•  fear and worry

Benefits of Prenatal Yoga for Labor and Birth
Regular practice of prenatal yoga can help promote relaxation, strength, and confidence during your birth. You will remember and draw upon the tools you learned in class to facilitate the labor process, soothe and empower yourself by finding your own rhythm, and improve your physical comfort. Most importantly you will be familiar with the muscles of the pelvic floor and be more likely to use them effectively. You will also know ways to relax during and between your contractions. These benefits can all lead to a safer and more emotionally satisfying birth.

At least 2 classes per week are recommended to help facilitate a more comfortable pregnancy, birth and postnatal recovery. The classes are open to students of all levels and abilities. To view our schedule click here or feel free to contact us regarding private lessons.

Christa was truly a gift sent from heaven to our family. She was our Doula and Prenatal Yoga Instructor. Having been doing yoga for 6 years, and recently moving to Rochester, I searched for a long time for a great instructor. The benefits of her prenatal yoga class were so good for my baby and I. I remained flexible, got rid of aches and pains, and most important took time for myself and the baby, and relaxed. Christa is one of the most positive people I know. She got my husband and I ready for a beautiful natural birth. She gave us confidence, support and helped us recognize the amazing things we can do when we put our minds to it. I cannot say enough good things about her. She has become a true friend. – Esra Krouse

I took Christa’s prenatal yoga during my entire pregnancy. When I began her classes, I had no idea how much yoga was going to come in handy for my natural childbirth months later. My baby boy was born without the use of pain medications, so I used the mediation and focussing techniques from my yoga practice to endure my 34 hours of labor. Also, because my labor went so long, I cannot say enough good things about the importance of being physically fit. Prenatal Yoga and Christa were incredible for me and my child. Quin and I cannot thank her enough! Thank you Christa. We love you and your awesome support! – Dr. Melissa O’Loughlin and her son, Quinlan

Christa excels at reading the pregnant body. Her prenatal yoga instruction was invaluable to my pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience. I always left class feeling as if our practice had been tailored to exactly what my body needed that day.  Her classes not only prepared my body for labor but while in labor I referred back to relaxation techniques and variations of labor positions, we had discussed.  Christa’s prenatal classes made my body feel strong and put my mind at ease. – Emily Hill

Christa’s confidence and integrity as a teacher shine through each and every one of her classes. She is a gentle and compassionate guide, helping facilitate each student’s experience with great skill and care. Prenatal classes are always a gem with Christa, and she uses her wide breadth of knowledge and her loving and kind personality to shape each class to the unique needs of the students who are present. – Emily Harowitz

After a 10-year love-hate relationship with yoga, Christa opened my eyes to its greater purpose while I practiced with her during my pregnancy. Her knowledge of the pregnant woman’s body and mind, as well as a woman’s natural ability to birth, was what allowed me to build the confidence necessary to realize my ideal pregnancy and birth experience. I was literally a different person when I left her class – calm, strong and fully connected to my growing baby. I would recommend Christa to any of my closest friends and family who are expecting; in fact, I have taken many out-of-town guests to her classes so they can experience the benefits of prenatal yoga for themselves. – Liv Burkey

I took prenatal and also parent / baby yoga with Christa. Christa is an amazing instructor. She took the time to get to know each student so she could tailor the classes to our physical and emotional needs. I loved taking yoga with my baby! He was so happy to watch mommy do the poses, he would laugh and babble the whole time. It was a great opportunity to bond with my baby while getting some much needed exercise and relaxation.- Shira Peterson

I attended Christa’s prenatal yoga classes through all three of my pregnancies.  I learned more in her prenatal yoga classes than I did in our Bradley classes with our first pregnancy, Lamaze class with our second pregnancy and the Hospital Birth classes with our third pregnancy!  Christa graciously weaves bits of important information into her yoga classes, making the experience that much more valuable!  If we get pregnant with a 4th we will have to travel to NM for just for Christa’s class!  She will be missed in NY.- Kelly
