Welcome to Sphere Mama! Sphere Mama is your tribe, your support, your family. Not only will you connect and bond with your baby on a deeper level during our classes, you will naturally form lifelong connections with your instructors and the women who participate in classes with you; flowing from prenatal yoga into mama and baby yoga through to mother’s groups- a tribe forms. This is where it all starts.  Sphere Mama is a community for pregnancy, birth, and beyond. We understand what it’s like to be pregnant and be a new mom. Our doors are always open to mom’s and babies running late, we always allow time after class to connect with other mom’s or nurse, and we’ll be there through the chaos offering a sanctuary of support. We offer you the best yoga with instructors who are trained and specialized in pregnancy and postpartum. We offer a friendly setting that nurtures and supports your journey to and through motherhood.  Sphere Mama is your home during this extraordinary time. We are honored to share this journey with you.

Sphere Mama was started in NY in 2006 with Christa Tyson and has served hundreds of families.  Women have come to Sphere Mama for their first, second, third and some moms even their fourth pregnancies. We are grateful you are visiting our site and truly hope to connect with you soon.  Please don’t hesitate to call or email with any questions or comments.  It is our pleasure to chat and answer any question you may have.

Parent and Baby Yoga

Parent and Baby Yoga

I have the honor of working with such beautiful, bountiful women during their pregnancy.  I watch these goddesses grow from early pregnancy  into those last few days of waddling around their due date. I share laughs with them, talk about fears, work through aches in the body.  I am their education during prenatal yoga, childbirth classes, breastfeeding classes.  For some, I am lucky enough to be at the birth as a doula.  Then baby comes and I get to play, sing, flow, giggle, study and cherish them in my Parent and Baby yoga classes. How lucky am I? It is the best job in the entire world.  These women and babies become my family.  The women bond and become close with each other, forming friendships and bonds that will carry them through those challenging parenting moments. The kids grow up playing together…and think they all met while still inside the womb.  What a great way to start roots for your child, a familiarity in friendship with others.

How do we grow wings to soar through the heavens?

We fall from that place of security.

And through falling were given wings.

And then we soar.

So, dont worry “will my baby cry in class” or “what if she has to eat” or “the timing is not perfect”… Once your here, among friends and amidst support you and your baby will be given wings to soar;) And you will have a blast doing so!

The Mantra “Om” for Conception, Pregnancy and Childbirth.

The Mantra “Om” for Conception, Pregnancy and Childbirth.

by Christa Tyson, E-RYT, E-RPYT, Doula, CLC, CCE

Bumper stickers, body art, t-shirts, yoga magazines…you’ve seen the symbol but what does it mean?

Om, pronounced AUM is the sound of Creation.  Everything that Was, Everything that Is, and Everything that Shall Be.  The past, the present and the future wrapped up into this 3-part sound.  Om is also believed to be the sound of everything individually at its neutral.  So for example, the sound of your partner snoring at night should really sound like “Om”, “Om”, “Om”, ok I guess that was a stretch…the phone ringing in the background, or the breath you take, the hum of the computer.  Can you find the hint of “Om” in it? When we chant OM or AaUuMm we bring ourselves back to our neutral energy, bringing relief from sluggishness or hyperness.  We also tap into something that transcends beyond this moment in time.  We bond with the before, the now, and the after.

How to Om

Om is pronounced Aaaa, Uuuu, Mmmm.

-Let the A sound start as a vibration near the navel or abdomen working it’s way upward.  This abdominal vibration taps into our center of creation.  Brining energy and vitality to our reproductive organs.

-Let the U sound vibrate in the chest.  The vibration here in the chest symbolizes preservation.  “Prana” or lifeforce energy is the breath that flows into the chest and lungs.  The breath sustains or preserves the body.

-Let the M sound roll up into the throat and head.  Vibration in the head brings clarity is associated with dedication.

Om for Conception

Everything that was, is, and shall be.

When you chant Om think of all the women before you that became pregnant, all the way back to your great great great grandma…Aaaa

Bringing you to the moment now, noticing the present moment, the sensation of the sound in the throat…Uuuu

Then moving forward and creating your future.  See yourself pregnant.  See your belly growing with a beautiful baby….Mmm

Om for Pregnancy

Aaaaa – Visualize a healthy Uterus, Placenta, and Baby.

Uuuu – Bring awareness to your heart and lungs that sustain your body and your growing baby

Mmm – Cherish this journey.  Gladly be the vessel in which your baby grows.

Om for Labor and Delivery

Vocalizing in low tones during labor can help relax the muscles of the pelvic floor, abdomen and shoulders.  When we clench our jaw tight we draw our shoulders up and our pelvic floor lifts, things you would want to avoid in labor.  Vocalizing relaxes the jaw, therefore relaxing the pelvic floor and shoulders!  Use “Om” to bring a sense of relaxation to the muscles associated with labor.  Just by opening the mouth and letting the sounds roll off the tongue you can help your body relax and open for delivery.  Chanting Om during labor also helps bring focus to the mind, which can help with pain management during contractions!

Yoga Mudras for Fertility and Pregnancy.

By Christa Tyson, E-RYT, E-RPYT, Doula, CLC, CCE

Sphere Mama is a coveted resource for families looking to conceive and support a healthy pregnancy. Many Yoga Classes at Sphere Mama are specific classes designed to support Fertility, Pregnancy and Postpartum changes in the body.  In these classes we always practice specific poses (Asana) and breathing exercises (Pranayama), but lately we have been incorporating more and more yoga hand positions (Mudra’s) to aid in conserving and spreading energy throughout the body for the benefit of Fertility and Perinatal challenges.  In this article I will discuss specific Mudra’s you can practice anytime, anywhere.  I hope you enjoy (and practice) these Mudra’s and I also hope to see you in class!

What are Yoga Mudra’s?

  • Most Yoga Mudra’s are hand positions (some are body positions) or gestures that help to stimulate different energies in the body.  Mudra’s are simple!  They have been used for thousands of years to support the healing of many illnesses and bring harmony to the body, mind and soul.

Yoga Mudra’s for Fertility

  • Yoni Mudra–  This hand position helps women get in touch with an innate female energy.  It also is thought to stimulate the womb and the creative power within.  The hand position actually looks like the vulva.  Bringing the hands together, the tips of the thumbs and pointer fingers touch each other while interlacing the rest of the fingers.
  • Merudanda Mudra– Will help to bring energy to the pelvic area.  To start bend all the fingers inward except the thumbs (like you are hitchhiking).  Place hands on knees with thumbs facing inward for 10 breaths.

Yoga Mudra’s for Pregnancy

  • Apana Mudra–  This mudra is beneficial during labor to help facilitate contractions.  It can also be used to help with pain and coping.  Bring the tip of the thumb to meet the middle and ring fingers, the pointer finger and pinky fingers stay straight.
  • Gyan Mudra– Represents nesting, starting a home or clearing the mind.  Bring the tip of the thumb to the tip of the pointer finger.  The middle, ring and pinky fingers stay extended.
  • Aakash Mudra– Can be used when setting intentions for your day or pregnancy to help you stay positive and healthy.  Touch the tip of the middle finger and the thumb together on each hand.  The pointer, ring and pinky fingers stay extended.
  • Pushan Mudra – Is a good mudra for nausea!  The two hands hold different positions; Left hand is in Apana Mudra (see above), the Right hand holds the thumb against the tip of the pointer finger and middle finger.  Tops of the hands face earth, fingers face midline.

I hope you have fun with these Yoga Mudra’s!  If you have any questions or need help please feel free contact me!
